like the powerplant in the BMW M3 performs
its task so effortlessly and responds so
eagerly to a touch of the accelerator.
The extremely compact V8 engine, with a
90° cylinder angle, revs up to an intense
8,300 rpm. Together with concise gear
ratios, this supplies enormous thrust to the
rear wheels. The engine, smouldering under
the powerdome, also boasts impressively
energetic acceleration at any speed or on
any road – be it a racetrack or a winding
country lane, the lateral force-regulated oil
supply system keeps the engine perfectly
prepared for slowing down, acceleration or
a succession of bends.
Unsurpassed driving performance and
unique dynamism are also supported by
the rapidly reacting Double-VANOS
variable camshaft control, ensuring powerful
acceleration at any speed. High-capacity
engine electronics with an ion current
knock control system free up every drop of
performance potential.

The very lightweight single throttle butter⇑ies
are built into the intake manifold, metering
out the precise amount of air needed for the
combustion process, at the exact time it is
needed – for instantaneous engine responses
and the ultimate in performance.
And what sounds so good on paper sounds
just as impressive in practice: the distinctive
note of the double-⇑ow stainless steel
exhaust system with fan-type manifolds is

Eight individually adjustable
single throttle butterflies allow for
instantaneous engine response.
Auto Start/Stop function. BMW V8 engines with 6-speed manual transmission automatically
shut down when the driver activates the clutch and switches to neutral and the vehicle is
stationary. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is activated again. This innovation
significantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in city traffic. It is also used in conjunction
with M DTC Drivelogic.
