New-generation diesel engines –
ahead of their time.
The world is moving faster. That’s why the Sprinter is not just up to speed; it helps keep you in front.
An impressive engine line-up is part of the Sprinter success story – one that’s set to continue more
powerfully than ever. Are you ready for tomorrow?
With newly developed 4–cylinder CDI diesel engines
in two power output versions, the Sprinter sets new
standards not only in terms of economic efficiency,
but also in respect of sustainable mobility. These
new generation CDI engines comply with the Euro 5
exhaust gas emissions standards – a full year ahead of
the Australian Government regulations. And, if you are
looking for more power, the V6 CDI diesel engine can
deliver with a torque output of 440 Nm with a smooth,
fully automatic transmission.
The new ECO Gear 6 speed manual transmission can help
to improve your fuel consumption, thanks to a greater
transmission spread, broader overall gear ratios and the
corresponding reduction in engine speed. ECO Gear was
developed especially for our vans: for instance the short
first gear for precise pulling away and manoeuvring,
or the smooth vibration-free gear shifting and great
smoothness of operation.
Combined with ECO Gear, fuel consumption can be
further reduced by the ECO Start/Stop system. The ECO

Increased torque, smoothness, economy and pulling
power are all delivered when and where you need it most,
across the range of Mercedes-Benz powerplants. The
advantages of the CDI or ‘common rail’ injection system
are many and are the result of continuous development by
Mercedes-Benz engineers. Because the fuel is atomized so
finely, the engines are able to deliver better combustion,
lower emissions, more torque, power and reduced fuel
consumption compared with EURO 4 models. For today’s
van driver, who needs to keep an eye on the bottom
line at all times, this can represent significant savings,
especially over longer periods of ownership. As with
previous models, we have chosen the tried-and tested rear
wheel drive to deliver traction, handling and safe load
Start/Stop system, which is a standard feature on all
4-cylinder Sprinter models with manual transmissions,
provides an intelligent solution to reduce engine idling.
ECO-Start/Stop offers a simple, no-compromise solution
to improving vehicle running costs and environmental
impact. ECO-Start/Stop is activated by the driver using a
control switch on the instrument panel. When the system
is active it will stop the engine whenever the vehicle is
stationery for more than two seconds with the gearbox in
neutral and the clutch released. The engine then restarts
automatically when the driver depresses the clutch. A
significant part of a vehicle’s fuel consumption can be
from idling in city traffic. By using the ECO Start/Stop
system you can not only save fuel consumption, but also
management. Whichever engine you choose, for whichever reduce vehicle emissions and engine wear and tear.
Sprinter model, putting the power down on the road as
effectively as possible is taken care of by the standard
ECO Gear 6 speed manual transmission (not available
on V6 CDI engine model). Or, if you prefer, an automatic
