Thesatellitenavigationsystemfittedtoyour
vehicleusestheGlobalPositioningSystem
(GPS).Thisworksinconjunctionwith
directionandspeedsensorsincorporatedin
thevehicle’selectronicsystems,to
continuallymonitoritsposition.The
navigationcomputerthenintegratesthisdata
withtheinformationstoredonthenavigation
CD,enablingyoutoplanandfollowaroute
map,whetheronoroff-road,toyourdesired
destination.Thisisparticularlyusefulifyou
aretravellingtoorthroughunfamiliar
territory.
Obstaclessuchastallbuildings,trees,
tunnelsandmountainscansometimesshield
avehiclefromsatellitesignals,whichmay
causeatemporaryinterruptiontothe
operationofthenavigationsystem.However,
thevehicle’sdirectionandspeedsensorswill
minimiseanyadverseeffectontheoperation
ofthenavigationsystem,ifthisshould
occur.Normaloperationwillresumeonce
theobstructionhasbeenpassed.
Thereare24GPSsatellitesinorbit(ata
heightof21,000km)aroundtheearth.The
GPSnavigationsystemwillpickupand
utiliseanyavailablesignalstoplotyour
position.Toaccuratelydeterminethe
positionofthevehicle,theGPSreceiver
needstobeabletopickupthesignalsfrom
atleastfoursatellites.
