BlueEFFICIENCY– technology for more efficient driving
As the inventor of the motor car, we have a
special responsibility for reducing its environ-
mental impact and improving its resource
efficiency – without compromising on safety,
comfort and driving pleasure.
In addition, the E-Class and S-Class now feature
BlueTEC clean diesel technology. Along with
common rail direct injection, BlueTEC diesels
feature a system of exhaust gas aftertreatment
that filters out 95% of soot particles and reduces
nitrous oxide emissions by up to 90%, leaving
little but harmless nitrogen and water.
We are also committed to the development of
electric powertrains that produce zero local
emissions. To this end, we’ve built a limited
number of our A-Class E-Cell and B-Class F-Cell
vehicles and are now leasing them to customers
around the world. The F-Cell uses a hydrogen
fuel cell to drive its electric motor, while the
E-Cell is powered solely by its battery. The E-Cell
Plus will feature a small internal combustion
engine that can augment the battery on longer
journeys, helping to extend the car’s range.
To help us achieve this, we’ve developed a wide
variety of solutions. The first to be introduced
to our passenger car range is BlueEFFICIENCY,
a package of fuel-saving measures that include
aerodynamic optimisation as well as the use
of lightweight materials, low rolling resistance
tyres and energy management technologies
such as the ECO start/stop function, which
comes as standard on an increasing number
of models. The new V6 and V8 petrol engines
for the CL and S-Class are among the latest to
benefit from BlueEFFICIENCY enhancements,
as a result of which they use up to 20% less fuel
than their predecessors, despite significant
increases in output.
HYBRID powertrains, the next stage in our
efficiency drive, ally economical engines to
electric motors and will bring new levels of
fuel efficiency and emissions reduction to
tomorrow’s Mercedes-Benz passenger cars.
Our BlueTEC HYBRID system, for instance,
combines the benefits of hybrid drive with
cutting-edge diesel technology, resulting in
intelligent on-board energy management and
low emissions.
