Safer driving
At Mercedes-Benz, we believe maximising
safety is not just a question of adding new
features. That’s why we develop our cars
in accordance with a comprehensive safety
concept that integrates all the various stages
of automotive safety: from active safety during
everyday driving and in critical situations to
occupant protection in the event of an impact.
Even ways of reducing the severity of an impact
are taken into account.
And because we never stop thinking about new
ways to make Mercedes driving safer, our cars
now feature up to a dozen different electronic
assistants that help you to avoid accidents
before they can happen. Active Blind Spot
Assist, for instance, uses twin radar sensors to
monitor the hard-to-see areas to the rear and
sides of the car (at speeds of above 20mph).
Distronic Plus radar-assisted cruise control
helps you maintain a minimum distance to the
vehicle in front, while the Pre-Safe Brake can
detect and warn you of a probable impact and
even brake the car automatically if necessary.
At night, the Intelligent Light System with
Active Light System and Adaptive High Beam
Assist helps you to see and be seen, without
dazzling others. With Lane-Keeping Assist your
Mercedes can alert you, by subtly vibrating the
steering wheel, if you wander out of lane, while
Attention Assist can even detect signs of fatigue
and recommend taking a break.
Over the years, many of our safety innovations
have gone on to become the norm for new cars,
such as the passenger safety cell with crumple
zones, the airbag and the seat belt pre-tensioner.
We were also the first manufacturer to fit a car
with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and
the first to introduce the Electronic Stability
Programme (ESP).
