Have the vehicle checked immedi-
ately; otherwise, the excess oil may
lead to engine damage.<
Approved engine oils
You BMW center will be happy to advise you
about the engine oils approved by the manufac-
turer of your vehicle.

"Measurement inactive. Have this
checked.":
The engine oil grade is a decisive factor for the
service life of the engine.
Do not add engine oil. Before continuing to
drive, note the recalculated remaining mile-
age until the next oil change service, refer to
Service requirements on page 72. Have the
system checked as soon as possible.
Approved engine oils can be found in the fol-
lowing specification:
Gasoline engine
Adding engine oil
Preferred:
BMW Longlife-01
BMW Longlife-01 FE
Alternative:
BMW Longlife-98
Approved engine oils belong to the viscosity
classes SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40,
and SAE 5W-30.
Alternative oil grades
If approved oils are not available, you can use
quantities of up to 1 US quart/1 liter of another
oil with the following specifications:
Do not add 1 US quart/1 liter of engine oil
until a corresponding message is shown
on the Control Display. Add oil within the next
API SM or higher

miles/200 km; otherwise, the engine could
be damaged.<
Keep oils, greases, etc. out of the reach of
children and comply with the relevant
warnings on the containers. Otherwise, health
hazards may result.<
Coolant
Do not add coolant to the cooling system
when the engine is hot. Escaping coolant
can cause burns.<
Oil change
Have oil changed only at your BMW center or at
a workshop that works according to BMW
repair procedures with correspondingly trained
personnel.
Coolant consists of half water and half additive.
Not all commercially available additives are suit-
able for your BMW. Ask your BMW center for
suitable additives.
Only use suitable additives; otherwise,
engine damage may result. Because
additives are harmful to your health, it is impor-
tant to follow the instructions on the contain-
ers.<
Oil grades
Do not use any oil additives; otherwise,
you may cause engine damage.<
Comply with the appropriate environ-
mental protection regulations when dis-
posing of coolant additives.<
