The invention of the luxury estate. Up to the late 1970s, the only way
to gain extra load-carrying capacity from a Mercedes was to take it
to a specialist coachbuilder. The idea of an official Mercedes estate
seemed almost unthinkable. And yet in 1977, at the Frankfurt Motor
Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled just such a car: the new W123T
(the ‘T’ standing for Tourism and Transport). Like its predecessors,
the E-Class Estate offers all the comfort, safety and elegance of
its saloon counterpart but with the added versatility of a larger load
compartment – and a personality that’s all its own.
