Theidlespeedofanenginemaybeaffected
by a number of conditions. For example, a
cold engine is inclined to run sluggishly at
idleaswellasunderload.Suchaccessories
as air conditioning and power steering may
loadtheengineduringidleandbringtheidle
speed down. Accessories that draw a large
amountofcurrentfromthealternator,suchas
headlamps, window defoggers, radiator fans,
etc., increase the load on the engine. So, to
providesmoothidleunderallconditions,and
toprovidethebestoverallfueleconomy,the
ECCSsystemgivescomputercontrolled,au-
tomaticidlespeedcontrol.Usingtheinforma-
tionprovidedbythesensors,theECMcalcu-
latesthebestidlespeedandbringsitabout
through the IACV-AAC valve, which allows
more, or less, air into the intake manifold.
