Thesafetybeltpretensionersatthefrontoutboardseatingpositionsare
designedtotightenthesafetybeltsfirmlyagainsttheoccupant’sbody
duringfrontalcollisions,andinsidecollisionsandrolloverswhenthe
vehicleisequippedwiththeSafetyCanopy௢system.Thishelpsincrease
theeffectivenessofthesafetybelts.Infrontalcollisions,thesafetybelt
pretensionerscanbeactivatedaloneor,ifthecollisionisofsufficient
severity,togetherwiththefrontairbags.

Thefrontsafetybeltenergymanagementretractorsallowwebbingtobe
pulledoutoftheretractorinagradualandcontrolledmannerin
responsetotheoccupant’sforwardmomentum.Thishelpsreducethe
riskofforce-relatedinjuriestotheoccupant’schestbylimitingtheload
ontheoccupant.RefertoEnergymanagementretractorssectionin
thischapter.
Determining if the Personal Safety  Systemி is operational
ThePersonalSafetySystem௢usesawarninglightintheinstrument
clusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthesystem.Refer
totheWarninglightsandchimessectionintheInstrumentCluster
chapter.RoutinemaintenanceofthePersonalSafetySystem௢isnot
required.
TheRestraintsControlModule(RCM)monitorsitsowninternalcircuits
andthecircuitsfortheairbagsupplementalrestraints,crashsensor(s),
safetybeltpretensioners,frontsafetybeltbucklesensors,front
passengersensingsystem,andthedriverseatpositionsensor.In
addition,theRCMalsomonitorstherestraintswarninglightinthe
instrumentcluster.Adifficultywiththesystemisindicatedbyoneor
moreofthefollowing.

Thewarninglightwilleitherflashorstaylit.
Thewarninglightwillnotilluminateimmediatelyafterignitionis
turnedon.

Aseriesoffivebeepswillbeheard.Thetonepatternwillrepeat
periodicallyuntiltheproblemandwarninglightarerepaired.
Ifanyofthesethingshappen,evenintermittently,havethePersonal
SafetySystem௢servicedatanauthorizeddealerimmediately.Unless
serviced,thesystemmaynotfunctionproperlyintheeventofa
collision.
