Safety | The integral safety concept
Intelligent thinking can be a life-saver
The integral safety concept from Mercedes-Benz
Few things are more important to us than the pursuit of
As much as we enjoy looking back, we never stop looking
new safety technologies. We’ve been developing innovative forward – and nothing illustrates this better than our
safety concepts since as far back as the 1950s, when
legendary Mercedes-Benz engineer Béla Barényi invented
the very first safety cell. At the same time, Barényi’s
colleagues were coming up with ground-breaking ideas
of their own. One of them, Rolf Maier, devised a simple
way of testing the behaviour of the steering and restraint
systems during a crash.
vision of accident-free driving. With our integral safety
concept, we are now closer to realising this vision than
ever before. It’s a concept that divides safety into three
distinct phases. The first phase is helping the driver
to recognise and deal with critical situations that arise
during the journey. The second phase is immediately prior
to a potential accident, when the car can take various
preventative measures to help reduce the risk of injury.
Then, during an accident itself, passive safety measures
can ensure effective protection of the individual occupants.
And there’s another vital point: following an accident,
a Mercedes is designed to make passenger rescue as easy
as possible.
He and his fellow engineers designed a special sled to be
driven against a wall at high speed. For impact absorption
purposes, they hit upon another ingenious solution:
gherkin tins from the factory canteen. It’s a classic example
of the creativity that shaped those pioneering years.
