TROUBLESHOOTINGTECHNIQUE
Thefollowingfive-steptroubleshootingprocedure
isrecommended.

VerifytheProblem
Checktheoperationofthecircuittobesureyou
understandtheproblem. Donotbegin
disassemblyortestinguntilyouhavenarrowed
downthepossiblecauses.
Oncircuitswithoutsolid-statedevices,atestlight
maybeusedtocheckforvoltage. Atestlightis
madeupofa12-voltbulbwithapairofleads
attached. Aftergroundingonelead,touchthe
otherleadtovariouspointsalongthecircuitwhere
voltageshouldbepresent. Thebulbwillcomeon
ifthevoltageatthepointbeingtestedisgreater
than5volts.

AnalyzetheCircuitDiagram(schematic)
Analyzethediagram. Checkcircuitsthatshare
thewiringwiththeproblemcircuit. Thenamesof
sharedcircuitsareoftengivenoneachCircuit
Diagramtoaidtroubleshooting. Sharedpower
andgroundcircuitscanbefoundinthePower
andGroundDistributionsections. Trytooperate
thesharedcircuits. Ifthesecircuitswork,thenthe
sharedwiringisOK. Thecausemustbewithin
thewiringusedonlybytheproblemcircuit. If
severalcircuitsfailatthesametime,chancesare
thepower(fuse)orgroundcircuitisfaulty.
Self-poweredTestLightandOhmmeter
Useaself-poweredtestlightorohmmeterto
checkforcontinuity. Theohmmetershowshow
muchresistancethereisbetweentwopoints
alongacircuit. Lowresistancemeansgood
continuity.

FindtheCause
Narrowdownthepossiblecauses.

Beforeyoureplaceacomponent,check
power,signal,andgroundwiresatthe
componentharnessconnector.

RepairtheProblem
Oncethespecificproblemisidentified,makethe
repair. Besuretousethecorrecttoolsandsafe
procedures.
(5)
ChecktheRepair
Checktheoperationoftherepairedcircuitinall
modestomakesureyoufixedtheentireproblem.
Iftheproblemwasablownfuse,besuretotestall
ofthecircuitsonthatfuse. Makesurenonew
problemsarepresent.
TESTEQUIPMENT
Whereapplicable,LandRoverrecommended
testersshouldbeused.
VoltmeterandTestLight
Useavoltmeterortestlighttocheckforvoltage.
Whileatestlightshowswhetherornotvoltageis
present,avoltmeterindicateshowmuchvoltage
thereis.
