Part-time 4WD operation
CAUTION:
4H→ 4L
Do not select 4WD (4H or 4L) mode on dry
paved roads. Especially on dry high way,
never select the 4WD mode.
Four-wheel driving on dry paved roads for a
long period will increase the fuel consump-
tionwithpossiblenoisegenerationandearly
tire wear. In addition, differential oil temper-
atureincreaseswithpossibledrivingsystem
part wear.

Stop the vehicle.
Depresstheclutchpedal(Manual Transmis-
sion) or put the shift lever into "N (neutral)"
position (Automatic Transmission).
Select the 4L mode.

By turning the transfer shift knob(4H, 4L), both
axles of the vehicle are rigidly connected with

2H(Rear-wheel drive)
When driving on normal roads and highway.
Turn the transfershift knobfromthe 2H mode to
the 4H mode at speed below 80 km/h. It is not
necessary to depress the clutch pedal (Manual
Transmission) or put the shift lever into
"N(neutral)"position(Automatic Transmission).
Perform this operation when driving straight.

The driving posture should be more upright
andclosertothewheelthanusual;adjustthe
seat to a good position for easy steering and
pedaloperation.
Be sure to wear the seat belt.
Drive carefully when off the road and avoid
dangerousareas.
4WD has higher ground clearance and a
narrower track to make them capable of per-
forming in a wide variety of off road applica-
tions. Specific design characteristics give
them a higher center of gravity than ordinary
cars. An advantage of the higher ground
clearanceisabetterviewoftheroadallowing
you to anticipate problems. They are not
designedforcorneringatthesamespeedsas
4H(High range 4-wheel drive)
Whendrivingoff-road,wetorsnow-coveredroads
with normal speed.
The 4WD engaged indicator light (
turned on to remind you that you are in the 4H
mode.

the 2H mode at speed below 80 km/h. It is not

Use "4L" for climbing or descending steep hills,
off-road driving, and towing the vehicle.
Especially when increased drive power is re-
quired.

on to remind you that you are in the 4L mode.
