ThisinformationrelatestothetiregradingsystemdevelopedbytheU.S.National
HighwayTrafficSafetyAdministrationforgradingtiresbytreadwear,traction,and
temperatureperformance.

Thetreadweargradeisacomparativeratingbasedonthewearrateofthetirewhentested
undercontrolledconditionsonaspecifiedgovernmenttestcourse.
Forexample,atiregraded150wouldwearone-and-a-halftimesaswellonthegovernment
courseasatiregraded100.
Therelativeperformanceoftiresdependsupontheactualconditionsoftheiruse,however,
andmaydepartsignificantlyfromthenormbecauseofvariationsindrivinghabits,service
practicesanddifferencesinroadcharacteristicsandclimate.
qTraction-AA,A,B,C
Thetractiongrades,fromhighesttolowest,areAA,A,B,andC.Thesegradesrepresent
thetire'sabilitytostoponwetpavementasmeasuredundercontrolledconditionson
specifiedgovernmenttestsurfacesofasphaltandconcrete.AtiremarkedCmayhavepoor
tractionperformance.
WARNING
Thetractiongradeassignedtothistireisbasedonbraking(straightahead)traction
testsanddoesnotincludeaccelerationcornering(turning),hydroplaning,orpeak
tractioncharacteristics.
qTemperature-A,B,C
ThetemperaturegradesA(thehighest),B,andC,representthetire'sresistancetothe
generationofheatanditsabilitytodissipateheatwhentestedundercontrolledconditions
onaspecifiedindoorlaboratorytestwheel.
Sustainedhightemperaturecancausethematerialofthetiretodegenerateandreducetire
life,andexcessivetemperaturescanleadtosuddentirefailure.
GradeCcorrespondstoalevelofperformancewhichallpassengervehicletiresmustmeet
undertheFederalMotorVehicleSafetyStandardNo.109.GradesBandArepresent
higherlevelsofperformanceonthelaboratorytestwheelthantheminimumrequiredby
law.
