Ifthevehicleisunabletocompleteaclimb,do
notattempttoturnitaroundwhileonthe
slope.Instead,adoptthefollowingprocedure
toreversedownhilltothefootoftheslope.
Onveryroughtracks,engagetheLOWgear
rangetoenableasteady,lowspeedtobe
maintainedwithoutconstantuseoftheclutch
andbrakepedals.

Holdthevehiclestationaryusingbothfoot
andhandbrakes.

Restarttheengineifnecessary.
EngageLOWrangereversegear(’R’for
automatictransmission).

Releasethehandbrake.Thenreleasethe
footbrakeandclutch(whereapplicable)
simultaneously,andallowthevehicleto
reversedowntheslopeusingengine
brakingtocontroltherateofdescent.
CLIMBINGSTEEPSLOPES
ALWAYSfollowthelineoftheslope;travelling
diagonallycouldencouragethevehicletoslide
broadsidedowntheslope.

Unlessitisnecessarytostopthevehicle
inordertonegotiateobstructions,DONOT
applythebrakeorclutchpedalduringthe
descent.
SteepclimbswillusuallyrequiretheLOWgear
range.Ifthesurfaceislooseorslippery,use
sufficientspeedinthehighestpracticalgear
totakeadvantageofthevehicle’smomentum.
However,toohighaspeedoverabumpy
surfacemayresultinawheellifting,causing
thevehicletolosetraction.Inthiscasetrya
slowerapproach.Tractioncanalsobe
Ifthevehiclebeginstoslide,accelerate
slightlytoallowthetyrestoregaingrip.
Whenthevehicleisbackonlevelgroundor
tractioncanberegained,afasterapproach
willprobablyenablethehilltobeclimbed.
