position.Thesystemisdesignedtohelpprotectsmallerdriverssitting
closetothedriverairbagbyprovidingalowerairbagoutputlevel.

Thefrontsafetybeltusagesensorsdetectwhetherornotthedriverand
frontoutboardpassengersafetybeltsarefastened.Thisinformation
allowsyourPersonalSafetySystemtotailortheairbagdeploymentand
safetybeltpretensioneractivationdependinguponsafetybeltusage.

Frontsafetybeltpretensioners
Thesafetybeltpretensionersaredesignedtotightenthesafetybelts
firmlyagainsttheoccupant’sbodyduringacollision.Thismaximizesthe
effectivenessofthesafetybeltsandhelpsproperlypositiontheoccupant
relativetotheairbagtoimproveprotection.Thesafetybelt
pretensionerscanbeeitheractivatedaloneor,ifthecollisionisof
sufficientseverity,togetherwiththeairbags.
Frontsafetybeltenergymanagementretractors
Thefrontsafetybeltenergymanagementretractorsallowwebbingtobe
pulledoutoftheretractorinagradualandcontrolledmannerin
responsetotheoccupant’sforwardmomentum.Thishelpsreducethe
riskofforce-relatedinjuriestotheoccupant’schestbylimitingtheload
ontheoccupant.RefertoSafetyBeltsectioninthischapter.
DeterminingifthePersonalSafetySystemisoperational
ThePersonalSafetySystemusesawarninglightintheinstrument
clusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthesystem.Refer
totheWarningLightsectionintheInstrumentClusterchapter.
RoutinemaintenanceofthePersonalSafetySystemisnotrequired.
TheRestraintsControlModule(RCM)monitorsitsowninternalcircuits
andthecircuitsfortheairbagsupplementalrestraints,crashsensor(s),
safetybeltpretensioners,frontsafetybeltbucklesensors,andthedriver
seatpositionsensor.Inaddition,theRCMalsomonitorstherestraints
warninglightintheinstrumentcluster.Adifficultywiththesystemis
indicatedbyoneormoreofthefollowing.
