Brakes
PARKING BRAKE
To engage the parking brake, pull the lever up
(the parking brake warning light illuminates).
WARNING
In exceptional cases, if the parking brake has
to be used to slow or stop the vehicle, do not
pull the lever up too hard. Keep the button on
the lever depressed the whole time.
To release, pull the lever up slightly, depress
the button and lower the lever (the parking
brake warning light extinguishes).
Too violent an application of the parking
brake could over-brake the rear wheels and
cause the rear of the vehicle to skid.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Always apply the parking brake fully
whenever you park.
NOTE: The brake lights do not illuminate when
the parking brake is applied.
DO NOT rely on the parking brake to
operate effectively if the vehicle has been
subjected to immersion in mud and water,
see ‘After wading’, page 185.
When parking on a slope, do not rely on the
parking brake alone to hold the vehicle, always
select ‘P’ (park) for extra security.
Ensure the parking pawl of the gearbox has fully
engaged by carefully releasing the foot brake
and allowing the vehicle to ‘rock’ into ‘P’ (park).
This is particularly important when LOW range
is selected.
WARNING
DO NOT apply the parking brake whilst the
vehicle is in motion (except in an
emergency), as this could result in a loss of
vehicle control and damage to the
transmission.
