Foroptimumprotection,thedriverand
passengerseatbeltsareequippedwith
pretensionerandloadlimitingsystems.
Forboththesesystemstoworkproperly
youmustweartheseatbeltproperly.
Incorrectpositioningofthedriverand
passengerseatbeltsisdangerous.
Withoutproperpositioning,the
pretensionerandloadlimiting
systemscannotprovideadequate
protectioninanaccidentandthis
couldresultinseriousinjury.For
moredetailsaboutwearingseat
belts,referto“Fasteningtheseat
belts”(page2-10).
Pretensioners:
Inmoderateorseverefrontalornear-
frontalaccidents,theairbagand
pretensionersystemsdeploy
simultaneously.Theseatbeltretractors
removeslackquicklyastheairbagsare
expanding.Anytimetheairbagsand
frontseatbeltpretensionershavefired
theymustbereplaced.
Haveyourseatbeltschanged
immediatelyifthepretensionerorload
limiterhasbeenexpended:
Iftheairbagsdeploythe
Inaddition,thepretensionersystemfor
thepassenger,likethepassengerairbag,
isdesignedtoonlydeployinaccordance
withthetotalseatedweightonthe
passengerseat(page2-43)orwhenthe
passengerairbagdeactivationswitch
turnedtotheONposition(page2-39).
correspondingpretensioner(s)may
alsodeployatthesametime.Like
theairbags,theseatbelt
pretensionerswillonlyfunctiononce.
Whileitissafertouseacrash-used
seatbeltthatwasusedinan
accidentthannoseatbeltatall,
usingaseatbeltwithanexpended
pretensionerorloadlimiterloaded
reducesthesafetyavailabletoyou.If
theseatbeltpretensionersarenot
replaced,theriskofinjuryina
collisionwillincrease.Expendedseat
beltpretensionersandairbagsmust
bereplacedafteranycollisionwhich
causedthemtodeploy.Additionally,
theloadlimiterwillonlylimitloads
onthechestonceinacollisionand
thisisanotherreasontohavethe
seatbeltsinspected.Alwayshavean
AuthorizedMazdaDealerinspectthe
seatbeltpretensionersandairbags
afteranycollision.
Loadlimiter:
Theloadlimitingsystemreleasesbelt
webbinginacontrolledmannertoreduce
beltforceontheoccupant'schest.While
themostsevereloadonaseatbeltoccurs
infrontalcollisions,theloadlimiterhas
anautomaticmechanicalfunctionandcan
activateinanyaccidentmodewith
sufficientoccupantmovement.
Evenifthepretensionershavenotfired,
theloadlimitingfunctionmustbe
checkedbyanAuthorizedMazdaDealer
afteranycollision.
