The definition of a luxury saloon
Since the beginning of the 20th century, our cars have captivated successive generations of drivers with their elegant style and exceptional quality.
The S-Class in particular has helped to shape the face of luxury motoring. Its direct line dates back to 1951 and the inaugural Frankfurt Motor Show,
where Mercedes-Benz presented its new 6-cylinder 220 saloon, a car whose effortless performance and impressive levels of equipment set the tone for
a whole series of great luxury saloons.
The first of these to be officially designated ‘S-Class’, the W116 range, was launched in 1972. Since then, the name has stood for exceptional comfort,
innovative technology and, of course, ground-breaking safety systems. Crumple zones, ABS, ESP and the airbag, for instance, all made their debut in
an S-Class – and went on to become the norm for cars of all makes and sizes. And although that alone means its place in the history books is assured,
the S-Class continues to lead the way – with new technology and ever higher standards of luxury.
