BlueEFFICIENCY – technology for more efficient driving
As the inventor of the motor car, we have a special responsibility for reducing its environmental impact and improving its resource efficiency –
without compromising on safety, comfort and driving pleasure. → www.mercedes-benz.co.uk/environment
Our ultimate goal is emission-free driving.
To help us achieve this, we’ve developed a wide
variety of solutions. The first to be introduced
to our passenger car range is BlueEFFICIENCY,
a package of fuel-saving technologies that
include aerodynamic enhancements and
improvements to the energy management
systems. HYBRID technology, the next stage in
our efficiency drive, allies economical engines
to electric motors and will bring new levels
of fuel efficiency and emissions reduction to
tomorrow’s Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Our
BlueTEC HYBRID system, for instance, combines
the benefits of hybrid drive with cutting-edge
diesel technology, resulting in intelligent on-
board energy management and low emissions.
a biomass-to-liquid fuel that avoids adverse
effects on food production – and actively
researching the possibilities for viable electric
cars with high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.
Our BlueZERO concept vehicles demonstrate
some of the potential applications of this
technology. Although based on one common
platform, they showcase three different
types of powertrain: a fuel cell system, a
battery-only system, and a battery system with
an internal combustion engine for on-board
electricity generation.
to the building and maintenance of new
factories too, saving energy, avoiding harmful
emissions and making increasing use of renew-
able resources. These efforts have not gone
unnoticed either: Mercedes-Benz is the only
manufacturer to have been awarded environ-
ment certificates by the independent Technical
Inspection Authority TÜV SÜD in Munich.
Another area of our environmental research
is bionics, the study of natural structures and
materials in order to gain technical insights.
This can help us identify new ways to optimise
the aerodynamics and lower the weight of
our vehicles – and hence further reduce their
What’s more, we believe in a holistic approach
to all aspects of the vehicle development process:
our Design for Environment philosophy involves fuel consumption and emissions. Last but not
taking the entire lifecycle of a vehicle into
account, from its initial planning to its end-
of-life recycling. We apply the same principle
least, you can make an important contribution
to emissions reduction yourself – simply by
driving as efficiently as possible.
Mercedes-Benz is also helping to develop
alternatives to fossil fuels – such as SunDiesel,
