Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricatethebag)or
sodiumcompounds(e.g.,baking
soda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatesthe
airbag.Smallamountsofsodium
hydroxidemaybepresentwhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,but
noneoftheresidueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelp
reduceseriousinjuries,contactwithadeployingairbagmayalsocause
abrasions,swellingortemporaryhearingloss.Becauseairbagsmust
inflaterapidlyandwithconsiderableforce,thereistheriskofdeathor
seriousinjuriessuchasfractures,facialandeyeinjuriesorinternal
injuries,particularlytooccupantswhoarenotproperlyrestrainedorare
otherwiseoutofpositionatthetimeofairbagdeployment.Thus,itis
extremelyimportantthatoccupantsbeproperlyrestrainedasfaraway
fromtheairbagmoduleaspossiblewhilemaintainingvehiclecontrol.
Severalairbagsystemcomponentsgethotafterinflation.Donot
touchthemafterinflation.
Iftheairbagisdeployed,theairbagwillnotfunctionagain
andmustbereplacedimmediately.Iftheairbagisnot
replaced,theunrepairedareawillincreasetheriskofinjuryinacollision.
