Occasionalbrakenoiseisnormalandoftendoesnotindicatea
performanceconcernwiththevehicle’sbrakesystem.Innormal
operation,automotivebrakesystemsmayemitoccasionalorintermittent
squealorgroannoiseswhenthebrakesareapplied.Suchnoisesare
usuallyheardduringthefirstfewbrakeapplicationsinthemorning;
however,theymaybeheardatanytimewhilebrakingandcanbe
aggravatedbyenvironmentalconditionssuchascold,heat,moisture,
roaddust,saltormud.Ifa“metal-to-metal,”“continuousgrinding”or
“continuoussqueal”soundispresentwhilebraking,thebrakelinings
maybeworn-outandshouldbeinspectedbyaqualifiedservice
technician.
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Onvehiclesequippedwithananti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS),anoise
fromthehydraulicpumpmotorandpulsationinthepedalmaybe
observedduringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupledwithnoise
whilebrakingunderpanicconditionsoronloosegravel,bumps,wetor
snowyroadsisnormalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthevehicle’s
anti-lockbrakesystem.TheABSperformsaself-checkafteryoustart
theengineandbegintodriveaway.Abriefmechanicalnoisemaybe
heardduringthistest.Thisisnormal.Ifamalfunctionisfound,theABS
warninglightwillcomeon.Ifthevehiclehascontinuousvibrationor
shudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,thevehicleshouldbe
inspectedbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.
TheABSoperatesbydetectingthe
onsetofwheellockupduringbrake
applicationsandcompensatesfor
thistendency.Thewheelsare
preventedfromlockingevenwhen
thebrakesarefirmlyapplied.The
