In the "N" position, the transaxle is in neutral,
which means that no gears are engaged. The
enginecan be started with theshiftleverin "N"
position, although this is not recommended ex-

For optimum fuel economy, accelerate gradu-
ally. Thetransaxlewill automaticallyshifttothe
second, third and overdrive gears.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
Use for normal driving. The transaxle will auto-
matically shift through a four-gear sequence,
giving best economy and power. Neverdown-
shift manually to '2' position or "L" position
when vehicle speed is more than 95 km/h (60
mph).

The function of each position is as
follows:
o P (Park):
Usetoholdthevehicleinplacewhenparkedor
whilestartingtheengine; shifttheselectleverto
the "P" position. Whenever parking the car,
apply the parking brake and shift the selector
lever to the "P" (Park) position.

o 2 (Second gear):
Usefordrivingon a slippery road, hillclimbing
or engine braking downhill. "2" automatically
shifts between 1st and 2nd gears.
CAUTION:
Never place the selector lever in the "P"
position unlessthevehicle isfullystopped.
Failure to observe this caution will cause
severedamagetothetransaxle.
This means that no shift-up to 3rd gear is
performed. However, theshift-upto3rd gearis
done when the car speed exceeds a certain
valueto preventthe enginefrom over-revving.
Manually move the selector to "D" retuming to
normal driving condition.
The highly efficient Hyundai automatic transaxle
hasfourforwardspeedsandonereversespeed.
It has a conventional shift pattem as shown in
the illustration. At night, with the first position of
the multi-function switch, the appropriate sym-
bol on the shift pattem indicatorwill be illuminat-
ed according to the range selected.

o R (Reverse):
Useforbacking upthevehicle. Bring thecarto
a complete stop before shifting the selector
lever to "R" position.
