theycouldcompletelyfailatany
time.Ifthislightremains
illuminated,aftercheckingthatthe
parkingbrakeisfullyreleased,have
thebrakesinspectedimmediately.

Brakingdistancesmaybelongeronloose

surfaces(snoworgravel,forexample)
whichusuallyhaveahardfoundation.A
vehiclewithanormalbrakingsystemmay
requirelessdistancetostopunderthese
conditionsbecausethetireswillbuildupa
wedgeofsurfacelayerwhenthewheels
skid.

ThesoundoftheABSoperatingmaybe
heardwhenstartingtheengineor
immediatelyafterstartingthevehicle.
However,itdoesnotindicateamalfunction.

Iftheparkingbrakehasnotbeen
completelyreleasedandthevehicleis
drivenatabout5km/h(3mph)orfaster,a
continuousbeepsoundwillbeheardto
notifythedriverthattheparkingbrake
hasnotbeenreleased.

qAnti-LockBrakeSystem(ABS)
TheABScontrolunitcontinuously
monitorsthespeedofeachwheel.Ifone
isabouttolockup,theABSrespondsby
automaticallyreleasingandreapplying
thatwheel'sbrake.
Thewarninglightstaysonforafew
secondswhentheignitionswitchisturned
totheONposition.
Thedriverwillfeelaslightvibrationin
thebrakepedalandmayhearachattering
noisefromthebrakesystem.Thisis
normalwhentheABSoperates.Don't
pumpthebrakes,continuetopressdown
onthebrakepedal.
