A sporting legend:
the SL and the
Mille Miglia
We revisited the scene of perhaps the
SL’s greatest past triumph: the Mille
Miglia. This most famous of Italian road
races wound its way from Brescia to
Rome and back, covered 1,000 miles in
three days, and made legends of drivers
and cars alike – the SL included. In 1955,
a 300 SL piloted by Fitch and Gesell took
the GT class by storm, leaving a trail
of more fancied machines in its wake.
Today’s SL is equally at home here. The
engine and chassis revel in the glorious
winding roads – and the many sleepy
villages and magnificent squares en
route provide the perfect backdrop for its
classic roadster lines.
