Occasionalbrakenoiseisnormalandoftendoesnotindicatea
performanceconcernwiththevehicle’sbrakesystem.Innormal
operation,automotivebrakesystemsmayemitoccasionalorintermittent
squealorgroannoiseswhenthebrakesareapplied.Suchnoisesare
usuallyheardduringthefirstfewbrakeapplicationsinthemorning;
however,theymaybeheardatanytimewhilebrakingandcanbe
aggravatedbyenvironmentalconditionssuchascold,heat,moisture,
roaddust,saltormud.Ifa“metal-to-metal,”“continuousgrinding”or
“continuoussqueal”soundispresentwhilebraking,thebrakelinings
maybeworn-outandshouldbeinspectedbyaqualifiedservice
technician.
Four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Onvehiclesequippedwithafour–wheelanti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS),
anoisefromthehydraulicpumpmotorandpulsationinthepedalmay
beobservedduringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupledwith
noisewhilebrakingunderpanicconditionsoronloosegravel,bumps,
wetorsnowyroadsisnormalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthe
vehicle’santi-lockbrakesystem.Ifthevehiclehascontinuousvibration
orshudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,thevehicleshouldbe
inspectedbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.
TheABSoperatesbydetectingthe
onsetofwheellockupduringbrake
applicationsandcompensatesfor
thistendency.Thewheelsare
preventedfromlockingevenwhen
thebrakesarefirmlyapplied.The
