ThelistenablerangeoftheaverageFMstationisapproximately40km

miles).Thisrangecanbeaffectedby“signalmodulation.”Signal
modulationisaprocessradiostationsusetoincreasetheir
strength/volumerelativetootherstations.
Terrain.Hills,mountainsandtallbuildingsbetweenyourvehicle’s
antennaandtheradiostationsignalcancauseFMreceptionproblems.
StaticcanbecausedonAMstationsbypowerlines,electricfences,
trafficlightsandthunderstorms.Movingawayfromaninterfering
structure(outofits“shadow”)returnsyourreceptiontonormal.
Stationoverload.Weaksignalsaresometimescapturedbystronger
signalswhenyoupassabroadcasttower.Astrongersignalmay
temporarilyovertakeaweakersignalandplaywhiletheweakstation
frequencyisdisplayed.
