No ordinary ore
On the face of it, a small lump of rock containing a relatively
abundant element isn’t much to write home about. This particular
element, however, which goes by the symbol Cr and has the atomic
number 24, not only lends itself to the creation of corrosion- and
heat-resistant alloys, it also puts the glow in van Gogh’s sunflowers,
gives rubies their fiery red colour and turns the heads of car
aficionados the world over.
Chrome: the very word suggests glamour, luxury and the flamboyant
classic cars of a bygone age. And yet the appeal of a chromed finish
remains as strong as ever. Chrome is versatile and vibrant – the
name derives from the Greek for colour and was chosen because of
the brightly coloured compounds it produces. Chrome shines and
shimmers. It captures the attention and creates fascinating contrasts
–
and nowhere more so than on a GL, where refined chrome trim
provides the perfect counterpoint to rugged style.
