The presence of a large beaver dam on an idyllic Alabama
lake might not, at first glance, seem especially unusual.
Except that this particular dam receives daily visits from
an environmental engineer, the lake is actually a rainwater
collection basin and the apparent idyll is, in fact, the
Tuscaloosa plant where our GL-Class off-roaders are made.
Although Scott Baggett, the aforementioned engineer, has
set eyes on the elusive beaver just twice in 11 years, he
takes great pride in its choice of home, which is testimony
to the quality of the water and an endorsement of the
plant’s stringent environmental standards. The same
high standards are, of course, applied to the cars that
come off its production line. As a result, all GL engines
now feature enhancements that improve fuel efficiency
even further, while every diesel is fitted with a
standard particulate filter that makes for even cleaner
exhaust emissions.
