The 4MATIC four-wheel drive system features
a two-speed transfer case that’s directly
connected to the transmission. From there,
two Cardan shafts with constant-velocity
joints distribute the engine’s torque equally
(in normal circumstances) between the front
and rear axles, with a bevel differential
providing rotational speed compensation.
For off-road use, the two-speed transfer case
enables the driver to engage a special low-range
gear. This additional ratio gives you greater
power and more traction on unmade surfaces,
making it easier to climb slopes or pull
heavy loads.
A perfect team: the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system works in harmony with ESP and 4ETS
