Useofengineforbraking
Useofexcessiveclutchsliptopreventthe
enginestallingwillresultinprematureclutch
wear.Alwaysselectagearlowenoughto
enablethevehicletoproceedwithouttheneed
tosliptheclutch.
Beforedescendingsteepslopes,stopthe
vehicleatleastitslengthbeforethedescent,
movethegearshiftleverto’N’,engageLOW
rangeandthenselectfirstorsecondgear(’1’
or’2’forautomatictransmission)depending
ontheseverityoftheincline.
DONOTdrivewithyourfootrestingonthe
clutchpedal;drivingacrossuneventerrain
couldcauseyoutoinadvertentlydepressthe
clutch,resultinginlossofcontrolofthe
vehicle.
Whiledescendingtheslopeitshouldbe
rememberedthattheenginewillprovide
sufficientbrakingefforttocontroltherateof
descent,andthatthebrakesshouldnotbe
applied.
Gearselection-automaticgearbox
Onautomaticmodels,withthegearshiftlever
setat’D’,thegearboxautomaticallyprovides
thecorrectgearfortheappropriategearrange
selected(HIGHorLOW).Rememberthat
position’1’willholdthegearboxinfirstgear
togivemaximumenginebrakingwhen
required.
Accelerating
Usetheacceleratorwithcare;anysudden
surgeofpowermayinducewheelspinand
resultinlossofcontrolofthevehicle.
Steering
HIGHrangegearsshouldbeusedwhenever
possible;onlychangetotheLOWrangewhen
groundconditionsbecomeverydifficult.
Uncontrolledspinningofindividualwheelswill
belimitedbytheviscouscouplingunitwhich
iscombinedwiththecentredifferential.
Braking
Asfaraspossible,vehiclespeedshouldbe
controlledthroughcorrectgearselection.
Applicationofthepedalshouldbekepttoan
absoluteminimum.Harshbrakingonwet,
muddyorloosesurfacescouldprove
dangerous.
WARNING
DONOTholdthesteeringwheelwithyour
thumbsinsidetherim;asudden’kick’ofthe
wheelasthevehiclenegotiatesarutor
bouldercouldseriouslyinjurethem.
ALWAYSgripthewheelontheoutsideofthe
rim(asshown)whentraversinguneven
ground.
NOTE:Ifthecorrectgearhasbeenselected,
brakingwillbelargelyunnecessary.
