theairinsidethetire).Asthecontainedairtemperatureincreases,the
tirepressurealsoincreases.Whiledrivinginanormalmanner,atypical
passengertireinflationpressuremayincreaseapproximately2to4psi
(14
to28kPa)fromacoldstartsituation.Thisincreaseintirepressure
isduetoanincreaseinthecontainedairtemperature.Containedair
temperatureisdependentuponseveralfactorssuchasrateoftire
rotation,tiredeflection,amountofbraking,etc.Inasimilarmanner,the
tirepressurewilldecreaseifthecontainedairtemperaturedecreases.
Forexample,ifthevehicleisstationaryovernightwiththeoutside
temperaturesignificantlylowerthanthedaytimetemperature,thetire
pressuremaydecreaseapproximately3psi(20.7kPa)foradropof30°
F(16.6°C)inambienttemperature.Thislowerpressurevaluemaybe
detectedbytheTPMSasbeingsignificantlylowerthanthecoldpressure
indicatedonyourvehiclesSafetyComplianceCertificationLabel,and
activatetheTPMSwarningforlowtirepressure.Ifthelowtirepressure
warninglightisON,visuallycheckeachtiretoverifythatnotireisflat.
Ifoneormoretiresareflat,repairasnecessary.Checkairpressurein
theroadtires.Ifanytireisunderinflated,carefullydrivethevehicleto
thenearestlocationwhereaircanbeaddedtothetires.Turnthe
ignitiontotheOFFposition.Inflateallthetirestotherecommended
inflationpressure.
WARNING: TheTirePressureMonitoringSystemisNOTa
substituteformanuallycheckingtirepressure.Thetire
pressureshouldbecheckedperiodically(atleastmonthly)
usinganaccuratetiregauge,seeInspectingandinflatingyour
tiresinthischapter.Failuretoproperlymaintainyourtire
pressurecouldincreasetheriskoftirefailure,lossofcontrol,
vehiclerolloverandpersonalinjury.

Thetiresonyourvehiclehaveall-weathertreadstoprovidetractionin
rainandsnow.However,insomeclimates,usingsnowtiresandtraction
devicesmaybenecessary.Ifyouneedtousesnowtiresandchains,itis
recommendedthatsteelwheelsareusedofthesamesizeand
specificationasthoseoriginallyinstalled.
