stagesofthedual-stageairbagsupplementalrestraintsbasedoncrash
severityandoccupantconditions.
Thefactthatthepretensionersorairbagsdidnotactivateforbothfront
seatoccupantsinacollisiondoesnotmeanthatsomethingiswrongwith
thesystem.Rather,itmeansthePersonalSafetySystemdetermined
theaccidentconditions(crashseverity,beltusage,etc.)werenot
appropriatetoactivatethesesafetydevices.Frontairbagsand
pretensionersaredesignedtoactivateonlyinfrontalandnear-frontal
collisions,notrollovers,side-impacts,orrear-impactsunlessthecollision
causessufficientlongitudinaldeceleration.
Driver and passenger dual-stage airbag supplemental restraints
Thedual-stageairbagsofferthecapabilitytotailorthelevelofairbag
inflationenergy.Alower,lessforcefulenergylevelisprovidedformore
common,moderate-severityimpacts.Ahigherenergylevelisusedfor
themostsevereimpacts.RefertoAirbagsupplementalrestraints
sectioninthischapter.
Front crash severity sensor
Thefrontcrashseveritysensorenhancestheabilitytodetectthe
severityofanimpact.Positionedupfront,itprovidesvaluable
informationearlyinthecrasheventontheseverityoftheimpact.This
allowsyourPersonalSafetySystemtodistinguishbetweendifferent
levelsofcrashseverityandmodifythedeploymentstrategyofthe
dual-stageairbagsandsafetybeltpretensioners.
Driver’s seat position sensor
Thedriver’sseatpositionsensorallowsyourPersonalSafetySystemto
tailorthedeploymentlevelofthedriverdual-stageairbagbasedonseat
position.Thesystemisdesignedtohelpprotectsmallerdriverssitting
closetothedriverairbagbyprovidingalowerairbagoutputlevel.
Front passenger sensing system
Forairbagstodotheirjobtheymustinflatewithgreatforce,andthis
forcecanposeapotentiallydeadlyrisktooccupantsthatareveryclose
totheairbagwhenitbeginstoinflate.Forsomeoccupants,likeinfants
inrear-facingchildseats,thisoccursbecausetheyareinitiallysitting
veryclosetotheairbag.Forotheroccupants,thisoccurswhenthe
occupantisnotproperlyrestrainedbysafetybeltsorchildsafetyseats
andtheymoveforwardduringpre-crashbraking.Themosteffectiveway
