Seating and Safety Restraints
duringafrontalornear-frontalcollision.Thismaximizestheeffectiveness
ofthesafetybeltsandhelpsproperlypositiontheoccupantrelativeto
theairbagtoimproveprotection.Thesafetybeltpretensionerscanbe
eitheractivatedaloneor,ifthecollisionisofsufficientseverity,together
withtheairbags.
Front safety belt load limiter
Thefrontoutboardsafetybeltloadlimiterallowswebbingtobepulled
outoftheretractorinagradualandcontrolledmannerinresponseto
theoccupant’sforwardmomentum.Thishelpsreducetheriskof
force-relatedinjuriestotheoccupant’schestbylimitingtheloadonthe
occupant.RefertoLoadlimiterfeaturesectioninthischapter.
Determining if the Personal Safety  Systemி is operational
ThePersonalSafetySystem௢usesawarninglightintheinstrument
clusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthesystem.Refer
totheWarninglightsectionintheInstrumentclusterchapter.Routine
maintenanceofthePersonalSafetySystem௢isnotrequired.
TheRestraintscontrolmodule(RCM)monitorsitsowninternalcircuits
andthecircuitsfortheairbagsupplementalrestraints,crashsensor(s),
safetybeltpretensioners,frontsafetybeltbucklesensors,driverseat
positionsensor,andpassengeroccupantclassificationsensor.Inaddition,
theRCMalsomonitorstherestraintswarninglightintheinstrument
cluster.Amalfunctionwiththesystemisindicatedbyoneormoreofthe
following.

Thewarninglightwilleitherflashorstaylit.
Thewarninglightwillnotilluminateimmediatelyafterignitionis
turnedon.

Aseriesoffivebeepswillbeheard.Thetonepatternwillrepeat
periodicallyuntiltheproblemandwarninglightarerepaired.
Ifanyofthesethingshappen,evenintermittently,havethePersonal
SafetySystem௢servicedatanauthorizeddealerimmediately.Unless
serviced,thesystemmaynotfunctionproperlyintheeventofa
collision.
