andbecomelesseffective.
Undernormaloperatingconditions,brakedustmayaccumulateonthe
wheels.Somebrakedustisinevitableasbrakeswearanddoesnot
contributetobrakenoise.Theuseofmodernfrictionmaterialswith
emphasisonimprovedperformanceandenvironmentalconsiderations
canleadtomoredustthaninthepast.Brakedustcanbecleanedby
weeklywashingwithsoapywaterandasoftsponge.Heavierdepositscan
beremovedwithMotorcraftWheelandTireCleaner(ZC-37–A).
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Onvehiclesequippedwithananti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS),anoise
fromthehydraulicpumpmotorandpulsationinthepedalmaybe
observedduringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupledwithnoise
whilebrakingunderpanicconditionsoronloosegravel,bumps,wetor
snowyroadsisnormalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthevehicle’s
anti-lockbrakesystem.TheABSperformsaself-checkafteryoustart
theengineandbegintodriveaway.Abriefmechanicalnoisemaybe
heardduringthistest.Thisisnormal.Ifamalfunctionisfound,theABS
warninglightwillcomeon.Ifthevehiclehascontinuousvibrationor
shudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,thevehicleshouldbe
inspectedbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.
TheABSoperatesbydetectingthe
onsetofwheellockupduringbrake
applicationsandcompensatesfor
thistendency.Thewheelsare
preventedfromlockingevenwhen
thebrakesarefirmlyapplied.The
accompanyingillustrationdepicts
theadvantageofanABSequipped
vehicle(onbottom)toanon-ABS
equippedvehicle(ontop)duringhardbrakingwithlossoffrontbraking
traction.
UsingABS
•
Inanemergencyorwhenmaximumefficiencyfromthefour-wheel
ABSisrequired,applycontinuousforceonthebrake.Thefourwheel
ABSwillbeactivatedimmediately,thusallowingyoutoretainfull
steeringcontrolofyourvehicleand,providingthereissufficient
space,willenableyoutoavoidobstaclesandbringthevehicletoa
controlledstop.
