isabouttolockup,theABSrespondsby
automaticallyreleasingandreapplying
thatwheel'sbrake.
Thedriverwillfeelaslightvibrationin
thebrakepedalandmayhearachattering
noisefromthebrakesystem.Thisis
normalwhentheABSoperates.Don't
pumpthebrakes,continuetopressdown
onthebrakepedal.
Thewarninglightstaysonforafew
secondswhentheignitionswitchisturned
totheONposition.
IftheABSwarninglightstaysonwhile
you'redriving,theABScontrolunithas
detectedasystemmalfunction.Ifthis
occurs,yourbrakeswillfunctionnormally
asifthevehiclehadnoABS.

TheABScannotcompensatefor
unsafeandrecklessdriving,excessive
speed,tailgating(followinganother
vehicletooclosely),andhydroplaning
(reducedtirefrictionandroadcontact
becauseofwaterontheroadsurface).
Youcanstillhaveanaccident.So
don'trelyonABSasasubstitutefor
safedriving.

tohavethebrakesinspectedassoon
aspossible.

Brakingdistancesmaybelongeron
loosesurfaces(snoworgravel,for
example)whichusuallyhaveahard
foundation.Avehiclewithanormal
brakingsystemmayrequireless
distancetostopundertheseconditions
becausethetireswillbuildupawedge
ofsurfacelayerwhenthewheelsskid.
