After fuel is added, the vehicle diagnostic system can
determine if the fuel filler cap is loose, improperly
installed,ordamaged.Aloosefuelfillercapmessagewill
be displayed in the instrument cluster. Tighten the gas
capuntilaЉclickingЉsoundisheard.Thisisanindication
thatthegascapisproperlytightened.Presstheodometer
reset button to turn the message off. If the problem
persists, the message will appear the next time the
vehicleisstarted.Thismightindicateadamagedcap.If
the problem is detected twice in a row, the system will
turnontheMalfunctionIndicatorLight(MIL).Resolving
theproblemwillturntheMILlightoff.
For states which have an I/M (Inspection and
Maintenance)requirement,thischeckverifiesthe
following:theMIL(MalfunctionIndicatorLamp)
isfunctioningandisnotonwhentheengineisrunning,
andthattheOBD(OnBoardDiagnostic)systemisready
fortesting.
Normally, the OBD system will be ready. The OBD
system may not be ready if your vehicle was recently
serviced,ifyourecentlyhadadeadbattery,orabattery
replacement. If the OBD system should be determined
notreadyfortheI/Mtest,yourvehiclemayfailthetest.
