For Karl, Bertha, Eugen, Richard, Klara, Thilde and Ellen
‘Papa Benz’, as he was respectfully and affectionately
known among his contemporaries, was not just the father
of the motor car. He was also the proud father of five
children, who assisted him in whatever way they could.
His eldest, for instance, accompanied him on his very
first drives. Rather than taking a seat next to his dad,
however, Eugen walked alongside the vehicle with a
canister in hand – for the simple reason that Karl Benz
had yet to equip his new invention with a petrol tank.
The family were also indispensable on his regular night-
time test runs through Mannheim, helping not only to
start the car and put its engine into gear, but also just to
get it back home again – which, in those early days, often
meant pushing.
Although these teething troubles were soon resolved,
thanks to the determination of this pioneer and his wife
and five children, neither he nor they could have
foreseen the luxury in which such a family would one
day be able to travel – the luxury of the new R-Class
from Mercedes-Benz.
