Occasionalbrakenoiseisnormalandoftendoesnotindicateaperformance
concernwiththevehicle’sbrakesystem.Innormaloperation,automotive
brakesystemsmayemitoccasionalorintermittentsquealorgroannoises
whenthebrakesareapplied.Suchnoisesareusuallyheardduringthefirst
fewbrakeapplicationsinthemorning;however,theymaybeheardatany
timewhilebrakingandcanbeaggravatedbyenvironmentalconditionssuch
ascold,heat,moisture,roaddust,saltormud.Ifa“metal-to-metal”,
“continuousgrinding”or“continuoussqueal”soundispresentwhilebraking,
thebrakeliningsmaybeworn-outandshouldbeinspectedbyaqualified
servicetechnician.
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Onvehiclesequippedwithananti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS),anoise
fromthehydraulicpumpmotorandpulsationinthepedalmaybe
observedduringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupledwithnoise
whilebrakingunderpanicconditionsoronloosegravel,bumps,wetor
snowyroadsisnormalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthevehicle’s
anti-lockbrakesystem.TheABSperformsaself-checkat17km/h(10
mph)afteryoustarttheengineandbegintodriveaway.Abrief
mechanicalnoisemaybeheardduringthistest.Thisisnormal.Ifa
malfunctionisfound,theABSwarninglightwillcomeon.Ifthevehicle
hascontinuousvibrationorshudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,
thevehicleshouldbeinspectedbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.
TheABSoperatesbydetectingthe
onsetofwheellockupduringbrake
applicationsandcompensatingforthis
tendency.Thewheelsareprevented
fromlockingevenwhenthebrakes
arefirmlyapplied.Theaccompanying
