LeavingtheVehicleWiththeEngine
Running
Ifyouhavetoleavethevehiclewiththeenginerunning,
besureyourvehicleisinP(Park)andtheparking
brakeisfirmlysetbeforeyouleaveit.Afteryoumove
theshiftleverintoP(Park),holdtheregularbrakepedal
down.Then,seeifyoucanmovetheshiftleveraway
fromP(Park)withoutfirstpullingittowardyou.Ifyou
can,itmeansthattheshiftleverwasnotfullylocked
intoP(Park).
{WARNING:
Itcanbedangerous  toleavethevehiclewiththe
enginerunning. Thevehiclecouldmovesuddenly
iftheshiftleverisnotfullyinP(Park)withthe
parkingbrakefirmlyset.
TorqueLock
Ifparkingonahillandthetransmission    notshiftedinto
P(Park)properly,theweightofthevehiclemayputtoo
muchforceontheparkingpawlinthetransmission.     You
mayfinditdifficult  topulltheshiftleveroutofP(Park).
Thisiscalledtorquelock.Topreventtorquelock,set
theparkingbrakeandthenshiftintoP(Park)properly
beforeyouleavethedriverseat.Tofindouthow,see
Shifting IntoPark onpage3‑14.
Ifyouhavefour-wheel  driveandthetransfer  case
isinN(Neutral),  thevehiclewillbefreetoroll,
eveniftheshiftleverisinP(Park).Sobesurethe
transfercaseisinadrivegear—notin
N(Neutral).
And,ifyouleavethevehiclewiththeengine
running, itcouldoverheatandevencatchfire.You
orotherscouldbeinjured.   Donotleavethe
vehiclewiththeenginerunningunlessyou
haveto.
Whenyouarereadytodrive,movetheshiftleveroutof
P(Park)beforeyoureleasetheparkingbrake.
Iftorquelockdoesoccur,youmayneedtohave
anothervehiclepushyoursalittleuphilltotakesomeof
thepressurefromtheparkingpawlinthetransmission,
thenyouwillbeabletopulltheshiftleveroutof
P(Park).
