After completing three 360 degree turns in an area free
from large metal or metallic objects, the CAL sym bol will
turn off and the compass will function norm ally.
Com pass Varian ce is the difference betw een magnetic
north and geograp hic north. In som e areas of the country,
the difference betw een magnetic and geograp hic north is
great enou gh to cause the compass to give false read ings.
If this occurs, the compass variance must be set accord ing
to the Com pass Variance Map .
Manual Com pass Calib ration
If the compass appears erratic and the CAL sym bol does
not appear, you must manu ally put the compass into the
“Calibration” mode.

To Put Into a Calib ration Mode
Turn on the ignition and set the display to “Com pass/
Temperatu re.” Press and hold the RESET button (more
than 10 second s) to change the display betw een VARI-
ANCE (compass variance) and CAL (compass calibra-
tion) modes. When the CAL sym bol is displayed com-
plete three 360 degree turns in an area free from large
metal objects or power lines. The CAL sym bol will turn
off and the compass will function norm ally.
