in violation of most state and federal fire regula-
tions and doing so will cause the malfunction
indicatorlighttoturnon.
A fire may result if gasoline is pumped into a
portablecontainerthatisinsideofavehicle.You
could be burned. Always place gas containers on
thegroundwhilefilling.
Loose Fuel Filler Cap Message
Ifthevehiclediagnosticsystemdeterminesthatthefuel
filler cap is loose, improperly installed, or damaged, a
“gASCAP”messagewillbedisplayedintheOdometer/
TripOdometerintheinstrumentcluster.Referto“Instru-
ment Cluster Description” in “Understanding Your In-
strumentPanel”forfurtherinformation.Tightenthefuel
fillercapproperlyandpresstheodometer/tripodometer
reset button to turn the message off. If the problem
continues, the message will appear the next time the
vehicleisstarted.Thismightindicateadamagedcap.If
the problem is detected twice in a row, the system will
turnontheMIL.ResolvingtheproblemwillturntheMIL
light off. Refer to “Onboard Diagnostic System” in
“MaintainingYourVehicle”forfurtherinformation.

Tightenthegascapuntilyouheara“clicking”sound.
This is an indication that the gas cap is tightened
properly.TheMalfunctionIndicatorLight(MIL)inthe
instrument cluster may turn on if the gas cap is not
securedproperly.Makesurethatthegascapistight-
enedeachtimethevehicleisrefueled.
