Ifthedriverrapidlyappliesthebrakes,EBA
automaticallybooststhebrakingforcetoits
maximum,inordertobringthevehicletoahalt
asquicklyaspossible.Ifthedriverappliesthe
brakesslowly,butconditionsmeanthatABS
operatesonthefrontwheels,EBAwillincrease
thebrakingforceinordertoapplyABScontrol
totherearwheels.
Neverallowthevehicletocoast
(freewheel)withtheengineturnedoff.
Theenginemustberunningtoprovide
fullbrakingassistance.Thebrakes
willstillfunctionwiththeengineoff,
butfarmorepressurewillberequired
tooperatethem.
EBAstopsoperatingassoonasthebrakepedal
isreleased.
Iftheredbrakewarningindicator
illuminates,safelybringthevehicleto
astopasquicklyaspossible,and
seekqualifiedassistance.
Theamberbrakewarninglampilluminates
brieflywhentheignitionisturnedon.See35,
BRAKE(AMBER).
Neverplacenon-approvedfloor
mattingoranyotherobstructions
underthebrakepedal.Thisrestricts
pedaltravelandbrakingefficiency.
AfaultwiththeEBAsystemisindicatedbythe
amberbrakewarninglampilluminatingandan
associatedwarningmessage.Gentlyandsafely
stopthevehicleandseekqualifiedassistance.
Drivingthroughheavyrainorwatercanhave
anadverseeffectonbrakingefficiency.Under
suchcircumstances,itisrecommendedthat
youlightlyapplythebrakesintermittently,to
drythebrakes.
ELECTRONICBRAKEFORCE
DISTRIBUTION(EBD)
EBDcontrolsthebalanceofbrakingforces
suppliedtothefrontandrearwheels,inorder
tomaintainmaximumbrakingefficiency.
STEEPSLOPES
Ifthevehiclehasalightload(onlythedriverin
thevehicle,forexample),EBDwillreducethe
brakingforceappliedtotherearwheels.Ifthe
vehicleisheavilyladen,EBDwillallowgreater
brakingforcetotherearwheels.
Ifthevehicleisstationaryonasteep,slippery
slope,itmaybegintoslide,evenwiththe
brakesapplied.Thisisbecause,withoutwheel
rotation,theAnti-lockBrakingSystem(ABS)
cannotdeterminevehiclemovement.
Theredbrakewarninglampilluminatesbriefly
whentheignitionisturnedon.See34,BRAKE
(RED).
Tocounteractthis,brieflyreleasethebrakesto
allowforsomewheelrotationandthen
re-applythebrakestoallowtheABStogain
control.
AfaultwiththeEBDsystemisindicatedbythe
redbrakewarningindicatorilluminatingandan
associatedwarningmessage.Gentlyandsafely
stopthevehicleandseekqualifiedassistance.
