How does the personal safety system work?
ThePersonalSafetySystemusesacollectionofsensorstogather
informationaboutthedriver’sseatposition,driverandfrontoutboard
passenger’ssafetybeltusageandaccidentseverity.Then,dual-stage
inflatingairbagsarecombinedwithsafetybeltpretensionersandenergy
managementretractorstohelpprovideenhancedoccupantprotectionin
frontalcrashes.
Thedriver’sseatpositionsensordeterminesiftheseatisforeoraftofa
referenceposition.Similarly,thesafetybeltusagesensorsdetermineif
thedriverandfrontoutboardpassengersafetybeltsarefastened.These
sensorsprovidetheabilitytotailortheairbagdeploymentbasedupon
howclosethedriver’sseatistothesteeringwheelandwhetherornot
thesafetybeltsarefastened.
Thedual-stageairbagsoffertheabilitytotailortheairbaginflationwith
twoenergylevels.Alower,lessforcefulenergylevelisprovidedformore
common,moderate-severityimpacts.Ahigherenergylevelisprovided
forthemostsevereimpacts.Whetherornottheairbagdeploysatall
canalsobedifferentforthedriverversusthepassengerbasedupon
driver’sseatpositionandsafetybeltusageallowingfurthertailoringof
thesystem.
Determining if the personal safety system is operational
ThePersonalSafetySystemusesawarningindicatorlightinthe
instrumentclusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthe
system.RefertotheRestraintsWarningIndicatorsectioninthe
Instrumentationchapter.RoutinemaintenanceofthePersonalSafety
Systemisnotrequired.
TheRCM(restraintscontrolmodule)monitorsitsowninternalcircuits
andthecircuitsfortheairbagsupplementalrestraints,crashsensor(s),
safetybeltpretensioners,frontsafetybeltusagesensorsanddriver’sseat
positionsensor.Inaddition,theRCMalsomonitorstherestraints
warningindicatorlightintheinstrumentcluster.Adifficultywiththe
systemisindicatedbyoneormoreofthefollowing:
