childwithenoughforcetokillor
veryseriouslyinjureasmallchild.
Accordingtoaccidentstatistics,
childrenofallagesandsizesare
saferwhentheyarerestrainedina
backseat.TheNationalHighway
TrafficSafetyAdministrationand
TransportCanadarecommendthat
allchildrenage12andunderbe
properlyrestrainedinabackseat.
Somestateshavelawsrestricting
wherechildrenmayride.
Frontairbagshavebeendesignedto
helpprotectadultsinamoderateto
severefrontalcollision.Todothis,
thepassenger’sfrontairbagisquite
large,anditcaninflatewithenough
forcetocauseveryseriousinjuries.
Eventhoughyourvehiclehasan
advancedfrontairbagsystemthat
automaticallyturnsthepassenger’s
frontairbagoff(seepage25),
pleasefollowtheseguidelines:
LargerChildren
Childrenwhohaveoutgrownchild
seatsarealsoatriskofbeinginjured
orkilledbyaninflating passenger’s
frontairbag.Wheneverpossible,
largerchildrenshouldsitintheback
seat,onaboosterseatifneeded,and
beproperlyrestrainedwithaseat
belt(seepage46forimportant
informationaboutprotectinglarger
children).
Childrenwhorideinbackareless
likelytobeinjuredbystriking
interiorvehiclepartsduringa
collisionorhardbraking.Also,
childrencannotbeinjuredbyan
inflatingfrontairbagwhentheyride
intheback.
Infants
Neverputarear-facingchildseatin
thefrontseatofavehicleequipped
withapassenger’sfrontairbag. If
theairbaginflates,itcanhittheback
ofthechildseatwithenoughforce
tokillorveryseriouslyinjurean
infant.
