Thetreadweargradeisacomparativeratingbasedonthewearrateof
thetirewhentestedundercontrolledconditionsonaspecified
governmenttestcourse.Forexample,atiregraded150wouldwearone
andone-half(11/2)timesaswellonthegovernmentcourseasatire
graded100.Therelativeperformanceoftiresdependsupontheactual
conditionsoftheiruse,however,andmaydepartsignificantlyfromthe
normduetovariationsindrivinghabits,servicepractices,and
differencesinroadcharacteristicsandclimate.
Traction AA A B C
Thetractiongrades,fromhighesttolowestareAA,A,B,andC.Those
gradesrepresentthetire’sabilitytostoponwetpavementasmeasured
undercontrolledconditionsonspecifiedgovernmenttestsurfacesof
asphaltandconcrete.AtiremarkedCmayhavepoortraction
performance.
Thetractiongradeassignedtothistireisbasedon
straight-aheadbrakingtractiontests,anddoesnotinclude
acceleration,cornering,hydroplaningorpeaktractioncharacteristics.
Temperature A B C
ThetemperaturegradesareA(thehighest),B,andC,representingthe
tire’sresistancetothegenerationofheatanditsabilitytodissipateheat
whentestedundercontrolledconditionsonaspecifiedindoorlaboratory
testwheel.Sustainedhightemperaturecancausethematerialofthetire
todegenerateandreducetirelife,andexcessivetemperaturecanleadto
suddentirefailure.ThegradeCcorrespondstoalevelofperformance
whichallpassengercartiresmustmeetundertheFederalMotorVehicle
SafetyStandardNo.109.GradesBandArepresenthigherlevelsof
performanceonthelaboratorytestwheelthantheminimumrequiredby
law.
Thetemperaturegradeforthistireisestablishedforatirethat
isproperlyinflatedandnotoverloaded.Excessivespeed,
underinflation,orexcessiveloading,eitherseparatelyorin
combination,cancauseheatbuildupandpossibletirefailure.
