computerthatmonitorstheengine’s
emissioncontrolsystem.This
systemiscommonlyknownasthe
OnBoardDiagnosticsSystem(OBD
II).TheOBDIIsystemprotectsthe
SERVICE
ENGINE
SOON
environmentbyensuringthatyourvehiclecontinuestomeet
governmentemissionstandards.TheOBDIIsystemalsoassiststhe
servicetechnicianinproperlyservicingyourvehicle.
TheServiceEngineSoonindicatorlightilluminateswhentheignitionis
firstturnedtotheONpositiontocheckthebulb.Ifitcomesonafterthe
engineisstarted,oneoftheengine’semissioncontrolsystemsmaybe
malfunctioning.Thelightmayilluminatewithoutadriveabilityconcern
beingnoted.Thevehiclewillusuallybedrivableandwillnotrequire
towing.
What you should do if  the Service Engine Soon light illuminates
Lightturnsonsolid:
ThismeansthattheOBDIIsystemhasdetectedamalfunction.
TemporarymalfunctionsmaycauseyourServiceEngineSoonlightto
illuminate.Examplesare:
1.
Thevehiclehasrunoutoffuel.(Theenginemaymisfireorrun
poorly.)
2.
Poorfuelqualityorwaterinthefuel.
3.
Thefuelcapmaynothavebeenproperlyinstalledandsecurely
tightened.
Thesetemporarymalfunctionscanbecorrectedbyfillingthefueltank
withhighqualityfueloftherecommendedoctaneand/orproperly
installingandsecurelytighteningthegascap.Afterthreedrivingcycles
withouttheseoranyothertemporarymalfunctionspresent,theService
EngineSoonlightshouldturnoff.(Adrivingcycleconsistsofacold
enginestartupfollowedbymixedcity/highwaydriving.)Noadditional
vehicleserviceisrequired.
IftheServiceEngineSoonlightremainson,haveyourvehicleserviced
atthefirstavailableopportunity.
