PREPARING TO START YOUR VEHICLE
Enginestartingiscontrolledbythepowertraincontrolsystem.This
systemmeetsallCanadianInterference-CausingEquipmentstandard
requirementsregulatingtheimpulseelectricalfieldstrengthofradio
noise.
Whenstartingafuel-injectedengine,avoidpressingtheaccelerator
beforeorduringstarting.Onlyusetheacceleratorwhenyouhave
difficultystartingtheengine.Formoreinformationonstartingthe
vehicle,refertoStartingtheengineinthischapter.
Extendedidlingathighenginespeedscanproduceveryhigh
temperaturesintheengineandexhaustsystem,creatingtherisk
offireorotherdamage.
Donotpark,idle,ordriveyourvehicleindrygrassorotherdry
groundcover.Theemissionsystemheatsuptheengine
compartmentandexhaustsystem,whichcanstartafire.
Donotstartyourvehicleinaclosedgarageorinotherenclosed
areas.Exhaustfumescanbetoxic.Alwaysopenthegaragedoor
beforeyoustarttheengine.SeeGuardingagainstexhaustfumesin
thischapterformoreinstructions.
Ifyousmellexhaustfumesinsideyourvehicle,haveyourdealer
inspectyourvehicleimmediately.Donotdriveifyousmell
exhaustfumes.
Important safety precautions
Acomputersystemcontrolstheengine’sidlerevolutionsperminute
(RPM).Whentheenginestarts,theidleRPMrunsfastertowarmthe
engine.Iftheengineidlespeeddoesnotslowdownautomatically,have
thevehiclechecked.Donotallowthevehicletoidleformorethan10
minutesatthehigherRPM.
