TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)
Eachtire,includingthespare(if
provided),shouldbechecked
monthlywhencoldandinflatedto
theinflationpressurerecommended
bythevehiclemanufactureronthe
vehicleplacardortireinflationpressurelabel.(Ifyourvehiclehastires
ofadifferentsizethanthesizeindicatedonthevehicleplacardortire
inflationpressurelabel,youshoulddeterminethepropertireinflation
pressureforthosetires.)
Asanaddedsafetyfeature,yourvehiclehasbeenequippedwithatire
pressuremonitoringsystem(TPMS)thatilluminatesalowtirepressure
telltalewhenoneormoreofyourtiresissignificantlyunder-inflated.
Accordingly,whenthelowtirepressuretelltaleilluminates,youshould
stopandcheckyourtiresassoonaspossible,andinflatethemtothe
properpressure.Drivingonasignificantlyunder-inflatedtirecausesthe
tiretooverheatandcanleadtotirefailure.Under-inflationalsoreduces
fuelefficiencyandtiretreadlife,andmayaffectthevehicle’shandling
andstoppingability.
PleasenotethattheTPMSisnotasubstituteforpropertire
maintenance,anditisthedriver’sresponsibilitytomaintaincorrecttire
pressure,evenifunder-inflationhasnotreachedtheleveltotrigger
illuminationoftheTPMSlowtirepressuretelltale.
TheTirePressureMonitoringSystemcomplieswithpart15oftheFCC
rulesandwithRSS-210ofIndustryCanada.Operationissubjecttothe
followingtwoconditions:(1)Thisdevicemaynotcauseharmful
interference,and(2)Thisdevicemustacceptanyinterferencereceived,
includinginterferencethatmaycauseundesiredoperation.
TheTirePressureMonitoringSystemisNOTasubstitutefor
manuallycheckingtirepressure.Thetirepressureshouldbe
checkedperiodically(atleastmonthly)usingatiregauge,see
Inflatingyourtiresinthischapter.Failuretoproperlymaintainyour
tirepressurecouldincreasetheriskoftirefailure,lossofcontrol,
vehiclerolloverandpersonalinjury.
