Starting the engine

Turnthekeyto3(on)without
turningthekeyto4(start).Ifthere
isdifficultyinturningthekey,
rotatethesteeringwheeluntilthe
keyturnsfreely.Thisconditionmay

Turnthekeyto4(start),then
releasethekeyassoonasthe
enginebeginscranking.Yourvehiclehasacomputerassistedcranking
systemthatassistsinstartingtheengine.Afterreleasingthekeyfrom
the4(start)position,theenginemaycontinuecrankingforupto
10
secondsoruntilthevehiclestarts.
Note:Crankingmaybestoppedatanytimebyturningthekeytotheoff
position.

Afteridlingforafewseconds,releasetheparkingbrake,applythe
brake,shiftintogearanddrive.
Note:Iftheenginedoesnotstartonthefirsttry,turnthekeytotheoff
position,wait10secondsandtryStep2again.Iftheenginestillfailsto
start,presstheacceleratortothefloorandtryStep2again,keepingthe
acceleratorontheflooruntiltheenginebeginstoaccelerateabove
crankingspeeds;thiswillallowtheenginetocrankwiththefuelshutoff
incasetheengineisfloodedwithfuel.
Cold weather starting (flexible fuel vehicles only)
ThestartingcharacteristicsofallgradesofE85 ethanolmakeit
unsuitableforusewhenambienttemperaturesfallbelow0°F(-18°C).
Consultyourfueldistributorfortheavailabilityofwintergradeethanol.
Astheoutsidetemperatureapproachesfreezing,ethanolfueldistributors
shouldsupplywintergradeethanol(sameaswithunleadedgasoline).If
summergradeethanolisusedincoldweatherconditions,0°Fto32°F
(-18°C
to0°C),youmayexperienceincreasedcrankingtimes,roughidle
orhesitationuntiltheenginehaswarmedup.
Youmayexperienceadecreaseinpeakperformancewhentheengineis
coldwhenoperatingonE85
