Seat belts
SEATBELTSAFETY
WARNING
Seat belts are life-saving equipment.
In a collision, unrestrained passengers can
be thrown around inside the vehicle, or
possibly thrown out of the vehicle, resulting
in injury to themselves and to other
occupants. DONOTtake chances with
safety!
Seat belts are designed to bear upon the
bony structure of the body, and should be
worn low across the pelvis or the pelvis,
chest and shoulders, as applicable. Wearing
the lap section of the belt across the
abdominal area MUSTbe avoided.
•
Seat belts should be adjusted as firmly
as possible, consistent with comfort, to
provide the protection for which they
have been designed. Aslack belt will
greatly reduce the protection afforded to
the wearer.
•
DOmake sure that ALLpassengers are
securelystrapped in at all times; even for
the shortest journeys.
•
ALWAYS fit the lap belt strap as low on
the hips as possible (never across the
abdomen) and ensure that the diagonal
belt passes across the shoulder without
slipping off or pressing on the neck.
Belts should not be worn with the straps
twisted.
•
Care should be taken to avoid
contamination of the webbing with
polishes, oils and chemicals, and
particularly battery acid. Cleaning may
safely be carried out using mild soap
and water. The belt should be replaced if
webbing becomes frayed, contaminated
or damaged.
•
DONOTslacken the webbing by pulling
the belt away from the body - to be fully
effective, the seat belt must remain in full
contact with the body at all times.
•
•
DOhave seat belts checked if the vehicle is
involved in an accident.
DONOTallow occupants to travelwith the
seat backs reclined steeplyrearwards.
Optimum benefit is obtained from the seat
belt with the seat back angle set to 15
degrees from the upright (vertical)
position.
•
•
•
It is essential to replace the entire
assembly after it has been worn in a
severe impact even if damage to the
assembly is not obvious
Each belt assembly must only be used by
one occupant, it is dangerous to put a
belt around a child being carried on the
occupant’s lap.
•
DOuse the seat belts to secure large items
of luggage that are to be carried on the
seats - in the event of an accident,
insecure items become flying missiles
capable of causing serious injury.
Pregnant women should ask a doctor for
advice about the safest way to wear seat
belts.
